Think smart, travel smart and sustainably!

Unless you have been hiding in a cave with no connection to the outside world, I don’t think any of us could have missed Greta Thunberg’s brave flight for our environment during recent months.

Check out your alternatives

Working in a company and with people who are passionate about traveling, I believe we all need to change our travel behavior and habits. It doesn’t mean we have to give up traveling. Far from it. If we simply rethink our behavior or tweak our habits based on our needs, there are plenty of transport alternatives out there. The airlines are working hard to reduce their carbon emissions to make flying ‘greener’. But, if you are not in a rush, you can consider other ‘slower’ forms of transport.

Traveling by train, for example, takes longer than a flight. But, if you are going on a business trip, it gives you time to work during your journey. Or, if you are traveling for leisure, it means you get to see places or scenery along the route which you would otherwise never see. The journey itself becomes part of our travel experience.

Build memories along the journey

I remember my trip with the Trans-Siberian Rail in 1989. We started in Moscow and ended up in Beijing, a fascinating journey that took a week. I saw a huge part of Russia (which at that time was still the Soviet Union), Mongolia and China. The restaurant car served Russian food as we crossed the Soviet Union, Mongolian food in Mongolia and Chinese food through China.

At Amadeus we already realized several years ago that it’s important to include different rail options in our booking platform. This is the future and an important part of the travel agencies’ business. Today, travel agents can book many rail providers via our platform, Rail Display. For our online customers, we offer Amadeus Web Services, where the travel agency can create their own booking page.

Personally, I look forward to seeing more of Europe through the train window and to meet interesting people along the way. One day, it will be possible to take the train to my favorite destination – the USA. Just imagine if there was a Trans-Atlantic railway!
